Youth Learn To Sail
Our youth Learn To Sail course is designed to introduce children aged 9 to 14 years (and their parents) to sailing as a sport. Previous sailing experience is not required.
Our club provides two courses each season. All our courses are directed by our Yachting NZ qualified coaches with assistance from our youth sailors.
Our junior programme is designed for children aged 9 to 14 years. Sailors must be able to swim a distance of 50 meters and remain in the water for 15 minutes unaided with a buoyancy vest. Sailors will be asked to demonstrate this in the swimming pool at the beginning of the course. It is a safety requirement of the club that all sailors wear buoyancy vests when on the water. The club provides buoyancy vests and boats to all course participants.
For water safety reasons, children with behavioral and/or learning difficulties cannot be accepted on the course.
The course starts with an introduction evening held at Te Rauparaha Arena and Aquatic Centre. At this introductory session, you get to meet the coaches, find out the details of the course, what to expect, what we expect, and the clothing and gear you will need.
Course participants will get the chance to right a capsized optimist yacht, and to show us that they can swim 50m in a life jacket, all this in the safety and warmth of the pool. Bring togs, towel and a buoyancy vest if you would rather use your own.
Following the introductory session, the course consists of 20 hours of tuition over 5 days. All of these course days are sailing and/or theory sessions. Please BYO lunch/refreshments on these days.

What happens after the course?
After the course is completed we hope young sailors absolutely love sailing and wish to continue sailing with us. If so they are very welcome to join the club and can do so at half price (currently $65 see membership page on this website for details).
Sailors who continue will be a part of the club’s ‘Rainbow’ fleet where they will continue to get coaching and continue to learn about how to sail well as they have fun sailing with their friends. The emphasis is very much on fun sailing at this level, and includes the odd fun race when sailors are sailing well enough and conditions are suitable.
The Rainbow fleet always sail at the club with a coach to look after them. They sail on Friday nights (from 4.30 pm till 7 pm) and Sunday afternoons (at 1.30 pm till 3.30pm). Sailors can come to either or both of these sessions as their interests and time allows.
Rainbow fleet sailors are welcome to keep using a club boat (at no charge) until the next Learn to Sail course students start sailing with us. After this point newer sailors get preference for club boats, but we can usually find a club boat if sailors wish to sail and have not got their own boat yet. Often this is the time when sailors start looking for their own boat. We can help show what to look for at this stage depending on the interests and size of the sailor. Before moving up to Green fleet sailors usually have their own boat.
